TRY SQUARE
Router Woodworking

Square to better than .0008"/length of blade or beam; my square can be your lab standard. I've sawn, routed, ground and inspected each blade for straightness and truth to no more than .0005" over its length. The hybrid tool can be used for setup, trying (checking stock for squareness), layout and as a reasonable standard to check the squareness of your other layout tools. You can knife and scribe lines with it on stock up to 8" wide. It is square inside and out.

It is essentially unhanded. The square supports itself (untouched) on 2" wide stock when the blade is on the right. With the blade on the left you have to support it like any engineer's square. The left end is 2.5" wide, having been milled square, can be used for some layout functions. The blade is an 1/8th proud north and as such, there is plenty of metal to retrue after a mishap. The laminate (acrylic and aluminum) has been milled flush to the rear and is parallel to the reference edges of the beam.
As woodworkers, the case is always made for and against precision. "Wood moves, right"? So why all the fuss? Why a square like mine? Indeed, wood does move. But if you can't lay out stuff, set up fences and fixtures accurately, inspect your stock, and reference to some standard, you're guessing your way through another project. Moreover, consistency in accuracy & precision pays for itself in product quality, time, and fewer defects.
The blade & reference edge are nested in square precision rabbets and held fast with stainless cap screws. The square is made from ground aluminum and acrylic because it can be machined to high target numbers and the materials are durable. Not as tough as hardened tool steel, but both require the same amount of attention and care. Bash either a Starrett No.20 or this Try-Square on the deck and you have a mess. But with mine, we can fix the blade; it can be reground or replaced. Done once for free, the next one you pay for. Customer s&h required both ways.
