Now you layout masters don't cap on my scribing technique. Indeed, your fingers should be closer to the work for more control but you can't see the scribe-blade if I hold the knife correctly. The thick (1/4") blade runs an 1" off the work for more knife or pencil intimacy.

The broad hand size tool is easy to hold still as you pencil or scribe.

Fig. 5
Very handy to be able to scribe and reference from either end of the work or square. A direct scale measurement is possible, taking the place of that "guess and by-golly" tape measure. The long blade can be swapped with the left for the southpaws. Clearly the tool rests by itself on the work.

Fig. 6
Furniture maker friendly. You're gonna paint the edge with ink alright, but so what?

Mark up to 8" of width for your rough cuts. Use it later for precision knife lines.

(Would not open paint cans with it however.)
