DOVETAIL TENONER
Router Woodworking
My dovetail tenoner will make tenons on stock 2+" thick and of any practical length. The stock width capacity is about 7". The jig requires an edgeguide and will work with most routers. An oversized subbase should be used to keep the router from dipping into the work-access window.
The edgeguide controls the shoulder width; a continuously adjustable edgeguide like a Porter Cable #42690 or the Microfence are the most pleasing to use. Any safe dovetail bit is permissible.
The 2 long faces of the tenon are routed from the same side of the jig with one edge guide setting. A third or fourth shoulder can be cut, referenced from either end of the jig.
The plans and instructions for use should be on line soon (6/2001) at the DeWalt Tool website. But, for those who'd rather get on with the business of woodworking rather than making jigs to woodwork, mine is available for 100$.
It is supplied assembled, squared, calibrated and tested. The 500 pound toggle is included as are a pair of 5/16-18 cap screws to hold the jig down on the bench. Freight, tax, boxing etc. are included in the purchase price (100$).
![]() A router with an oversized subbase and an edgeguide are needed to cut the dovetail tenons. Cutter access is through the window on the top surface. The jig/fixture is assembled with steel cross dowels, tongue and grooved, and corner braced. Expect essentially no deflection. (The jig is upsidedown.) |
![]() The work is clamped against the fence on this side of the jig. For safety, a C-clamp and the toggle (supplied) must be used to hold the work. Use either a plunge or fixed base router. |
![]() Here the fixture is bolted (cap screws included) to the bench and the work is getting its second shoulder length haircut (tenon face). The shoulder width is controlled by the edge guide. The long faces of the tenon are cut only from this side of the jig. A cut from the left or right end of the jig will produce a third or fourth (end) shoulder, (all in the same plane). |
![]() The width of the tenon can be controlled precisely with the edge guide. The length is predetermined by the cutter extension. Tenons, for legs/rails, and drawers can also be routed on the platform/jig. |
